Goals 2021-22

I am currently an occasional teacher in the public school system. This year looks very different than my previous years as a homeroom teacher. I am excited about this new role and I feel I'm growing as an educator every day. There are so many ways I can improve in this role, but these are the goals I have for this school year:

Goal #1: Become a More effective Junior/Intermediate teacher:
I set this goal because I find myself very uncomfortable in older classrooms, and I realize that I need to learn more about how to be an effective teacher for these students. I want to learn strategies for classroom management, understand the specific needs of this age group, and become a more well rounded educator. It is a difficult goal, since it is not measurable in the sense that I will be able to track my improvements. I will know I have achieved my goal when I feel as comfortable with older students as I do with younger students.
The following are the steps I will take in order to achieve my goal:
  • my plan for this is to prepare a significant toolbox of resources that relate to this age group
  • observe Junior/Intermediate teachers at work to learn from them and how they interact with students
  • accept jobs for Junior/Intermediate coverage so I can get hands on experience in teaching this division.

Goals 2019-20

Teaching allows me to continually identify areas in which I could improve and ensure I am reaching all learners on their unique learning journey. In order to do this in a way that doesn't overwhelm me, I identify one or two things I want to focus on each year. This year my goal is to revamp and revise my math block. The reason I am working on this area, is because teaching math is not an area of strength for me. In addition, last year I feel I didn't have a good grasp on the progress of each individual student and their specific needs. I also felt that I wasn't reaching my high fliers since I was so busy addressing the needs of the students requiring more help.

These are the changes I have made:
  • setting up a center schedule with four centers; 1. Meet the Teacher, 2. At your seat, 3. Technology, 4. Hands on
  • Organizing the students into flexible groups based on formative assessment data
  • making "hands-on" buckets that are specifically targeted to each group

Reflection:

Postives:
  • I am meeting with 1 group of students each day on an activity that they need support in
  • The "Hands On" differentiated buckets allow them to practice on their own
  • Students are learning the routines and are needing very little support in their independent work
Negatives:
  •  Setting up the routines takes a long time
  • Ideally I would like to meet with each group 2 times per week
  • The differentiated "Hands On" activities are still too easy for my high fliers.
